Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District officials are lifting a ban on open burning, so residents can clear dead brush off their property this month.”Residents in the unincorporated areas of the county utilize the system of open burning instead of putting all their tree trimmings and natural vegetation into the trash,” TMFPD Fire Marshal Amy Ray said.Only residents outside of city limits, in the unincorporated areas of the Truckee Meadows are eligible for the permits. To burn inside city limits, residents have to get permits from either Reno or Sparks.Although burning can be dangerous under the wrong conditions, Ray said under the right conditions it can actually help eliminate fire danger and other problems down the road.”If residents are proactive and do some of that treating and mitigation ahead of time,” Ray said, “then they tend to have less of a weed problem during the summer.”If you plan on burning, there are a few safety tips and rules to keep in mind: Burning is only allowed between 6 AM and 2 PM.
